Practice Updates 2/26/14

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

The Islanders hit the ice for their final day of practice before kicking off their final 22 games of the season tomorrow night against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Head coach Jack Capuano called the last week of practices a mini-training camp, aimed at reconditioning his players after having 10 days off for the Olympic break.

“It feels like we’ve had a week’s worth of practice and we’ve had some pretty good skates,” Travis Hamonic said. “At this point, we’re getting sick of practicing. We’re excited to get it going and get it started.”

Prior to practice, the Islanders did some extended work on their power play. Call ups Ryan Strome and Anders Lee practiced on the second power-play unit, while Brock Nelson centered the first unit. Due to the injuries up front, both units also featured two defensemen on the point.

Wednesday’s Power-play Units:

1st: Vanek-Nelson-Okposo, MacDonald-Visnovsky

2nd: Lee-Strome-Bailey, Hamonic-de Haan

Martin Skates: Matt Martin skated with the team in a yellow non-contact jersey. Capuano said Martin would not play Thursday against Toronto, but could be back this weekend.

Wednesday’s Lines:

Vanek-Nelson-Okposo; Grabner-Bailey-Clutterbuck; Lee-Strome-McDonald; Boulton-Cizikas-Halmo

De Haan-Hamonic; Hickey-Visnovsky; Strait-MacDonald
