John Tavares bolsters an already-stacked Canadian roster at the 2014 Olympics, joining a who’s-who of the NHL's elite. Among others, the Islanders captain joins Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Duncan Keith and Shea Weber, as Canada goes for consecutive gold medals and a third in four Olympic Games.
The Canadians draw into Group B, which features Finland, Austria and Norway. While natural rivals USA and Russia are in Group A, Tavares faces off against Islanders teammates Thomas Vanek and Michael Grabner in preliminary action.
With Canada's depth at center, Tavares may see time on the wing, but that doesn't faze the Oakville, Ont., native, who is excited to participate in his first Olympics and add to his already-sterling resume.
Tavares ranks third in NHL scoring with 66 points (24G/42A) in 59 games for the Islanders this season. He’s represented Canada at three world championships (2010, 2011, 2012) and won gold at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships.
