NYI WEEKLY PROSPECT WATCH: MARCH 18-25

Welcome to the second installment of the NYI Weekly Prospect Watch playoff edition. It was a jam-packed weekend with the completion of the NCAA Regionals. Unfortunately, all five of the Islanders prospects are out of the Tournament. Kyle Okposo"s Minnesota and Wes O"Neill"s Notre Dame made it to the Regional Finals, but failed to move on to the Frozen Four.

In the Canadian junior leagues, four Islanders prospects are in the middle of their of first-round playoff matches - Andrew MacDonald (Moncton in the QMJHL), Robin Figren (Calgary in the WHL), Dustin Kohn (Brandon in the WHL) and Tomas Marcinko (Barrie in the OHL). Here is their up-to-date stats as well as the other Islanders prospects throughout North America and Europe.
 

Name: Robin Figren
Position: Left Wing
Team: Calgary (1-1)
League: WHL
Acquired: Islanders 2006 third-round draft pick (70th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (2), Goals (0), Assists (0), Points (0), PIM (2)
Update: Calgary split their first two games with Kootenay on the road with a 2-1 win on Friday and a 4-2 loss on Saturday. The series moves to Calgary on Wednesday for the next two days.

 

Name: Shea Guthrie
Position: Wing
Team: Clarkson (25-9-5, ECACHL (13-5-4)
League: ECACHL
Acquired: Islanders 2005 third-round draft pick (76th overall)
Stats to date: GP (36), Goals (8), Assists (23), Points (31), PIM (30)
Update: It was one-and-done for the Clarkson Golden Knights. As the No. 1 seed in the East Regional they were upset in overtime 1-0 by No. 4 U-Mass.

 
 
Name: Dustin Kohn
Position: Defenseman
Team: Brandon (2-0)
League: WHL
Acquired: Islanders 2005 second-round draft pick (46th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (2), Goals (0), Assists (3), Points (3), PIM (4)
Update: Brandon won its first two opening-round games at home against Prince Albert by the scores of 4-3 and 3-2. Kohn picked up two assists in Friday"s win and one on Saturday. The best-of-seven series moves to Prince Albert on Wednesday.
 
 

Name: Andrew MacDonald
Position: Defenseman
Team: Moncton (2-1)
League: QMJHL
Acquired: Islanders 2006 sixth-round draft pick (160th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (3), Goals (0), Assists (5), Points (5), PIM (0)
Update: Moncton is up 2-1 in their best-of-seven series against Halifax. MacDonald is second in the league in scoring among defensemen with five points and first with five assists. MacDonald was awarded QMJHL First Team honors for is regular season performance.

 

Name: Tomas Marcinko
Position: Center
Team: Barrie (2-0)
League: OHL
Acquired: Islanders 2006 fourth-round draft pick (114th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (2), Goals (0), Assists (0), Points (0), PIM (2)
Update: Barrie went 2-0 in their first two games against Brampton with one game being played at each home rink. The series returns to Barrie on Tuesday.

 

Name: Tyrell Mason
Position: Defensemen
Team: Clarkson (25-9-5, ECACHL 13-5-4)
League: ECACHL
Acquired: Islanders 2005 sixth-round draft pick (180th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (39), Goals (1), Assists (11), Points (12), PIM (62)

Name: Troy Mattila
Position: Left Wing

Acquired: Islanders 2006 seventh-round draft pick (190th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (14), Goals (11), Assists (7), Points (18), PIM (6)
Update: Mattila earned two goals and an assist in a 1-1-1 week for Springfield. Springfield is one point out of a playoff spot with two games remaining.

 

Name: Kyle Okposo
Position: Right Wing
Team: Minnesota (31-10-3, 18-7-3 WCHA)
League: WCHA
Acquired: Islanders 2006 first-round draft pick (7th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (40), Goals (19), Assists (21), Points (39), PIM (34)
Update: Minnesota's hopes of a National Champion were dashed Sunday night by conference rival North Dakota. After a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Air Force on Saturday, the Golden Gophers fell in overtime, 3-2, to the Fighting Sioux after knocking them off in overtime by the same score a week earlier in the WCHA Finals. Minnesota came into the tournament as the No. 1 overall rank. Okposo earned an assist in the 4-3 defeat of Air Force in the regional semifinals.


 
Name: Wes O'Neill
Position: Defenseman
Team: Notre Dame (32-7-3, 21-4-3 CCHA)
League: CCHA
Acquired: Islanders 2004 fourth-round draft pick (114th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (42), Goals (3), Assists (18), Points (21), PIM (36)
Update: Like Minnesota, Notre Dame had high hopes coming into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 team in the country. And like Minnesota they narrowly defeated their first round opponents, eventually knocking off Alabama-Huntsville 3-2 in double overtime. Unfortunately, Notre Dame mimicked Minnesota in the Regional Finals as well, losing to a conference rival. The Fighting Irish couldn"t defeat Michigan State, to whom they fell 2-1.

 

Name: Stefan Ridderwall
Position: Goaltender
Team: Djurgardens (4-0-0)
League: J20 SuperElit (SWE)
Acquired: Islanders 2006 sixth-round draft pick (173rd overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (2), GAA (1.25), SV% (.959)
Update: Djurgardens is into the finals with a 2-0 sweep over HV 71 last week. Ridderwall has been in goal for all four wins in the playoffs. Djurgardens takes on Frolunda for the Championship.

 
 
Name: Shane Sims
Position: Defenseman
Team: Des Moines (27-18-8)
League: USHL
Acquired: Islanders 2006 fifth-round draft pick (126th overall)
Stats to date: Games Played (52), Goals (8), Assists (17), Points (25), PIM (125)
Update: Des Moines went 1-1-1 this week with Sims picking up one assist. Des Moines is currently out of a playoff spot with seven games remaining.

 

Name: Jase Weslosky
Position: Goaltender
Team: St. Cloud State (22-11-7, 14-7-7 WCHA)
League: WCHA
Acquired: Islanders 2006 fourth-round draft pick (108th overall)
Stats to date: Record (5-1-0), GAA (2.67), SV% (.899)
Update: St. Cloud lost their opening NCAA Tournament matchup to No. 4 seeded Maine, 4-1.
