The New York Islanders announced today an exclusive partnership with social media startup SportsYapper. This is the team’s first official partnership with a social media company and SportsYapper’s first sponsorship deal with a professional sports franchise.
“We created SportsYapper to give fans everywhere a place to connect with friends while they’re watching a game,” SportsYapper CEO Eric Goldstein said. “We are excited to be partnering with the New York Islanders to bring SportsYapper to their great fans.”
As part of this strategic partnership, SportsYapper will sponsor the in-game promotion “You Gotta Yapp That” during all Islanders home games, which asks all fans at Nassau Coliseum to ‘Yapp’ about major highlights during the game. The Islanders digital platforms will also encourage fans watching at home to ‘Yapp’ throughout the game. In addition to the in-game promotion, the Islanders will ‘Yapp’ with fans during games and practices to engage in more Islanders-centric social conversation.
“We consider ourselves an innovative hockey team when it comes to social media marketing. With this new partnership, we’re excited to take another big jump in the digital space,” Islanders SVP of Sales Paul Lancey said. “SportsYapper has a great platform and a great business model for the social media industry. A lot of these companies come and go, but we think SportsYapper has a tremendous upside and is here to stay. I can’t wait to start Yapping.”
SportsYapper is available for free download on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. In just its first few months, SportsYapper has reached as high as No. 12 among Apple’s free sports apps and has been favorably received and reviewed in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Forbes, PC Magazine, and Mashable. In addition to Goldstein, the roster of SportsYapper partners includes social media pioneers Dave Grossman and Darren Bounds, New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, veteran Johnson & Johnson marketer Brian Perkins, and entrepreneur Kenny Dichter, founder of Marquis Jet.
