The best NYI stories from the media in 2007

There have been a lot of great Islanders articles in the media this past calendar year. The Islanders salute the efforts of the newspaper writers covering the team, including Greg Logan, Mark Herrmann, Peter Botte, Dan Martin and David Caldwell.

Here’s a recap of some of the best of 2007. Enjoy!

Ryan Smyth Arrives on Long Island

When Islanders GM Garth Snow pulled off the trade that shocked the hockey world last season, Mark Herrmann of Newsday was there to follow Ryan Smyth when he made his Long Island arrival.


Islanders Watch Leafs-Habs
IslandersTV – 4/7/07

After rolling off the first three of four victories needed at the end of the 2006-07 season to clinch a spot in the playoffs, the Islanders gathered in New Jersey to watch Montreal take on Toronto. The Islanders need Toronto to win to stay alive in the playoff hunt and Islanders TV captured the moment. Click here to watch.

Tracking Down Mr. and Mrs. Dubie

Following his poke-check that sent the Islanders into the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs, columnist Jim Baumbach tracked down Wade Dubielewicz’s parents to get their reaction of the Islanders’ improbable run into the playoffs behind their son’s efforts in goal.

Quartet of Forwards Introduced/Guerin Named Captain

On July 9th, 2007, the Islanders introduced their newest quartet of forwards in Mike Comrie, Ruslan Fedotenko, Bill Guerin and Jon Sim at a press conference in Westbury, NY. Greg Logan of Newsday recapped the event.

Also at the press conference, Bill Guerin was named the 11th captain in franchise history. Mark Herrmann wrote about the changing of guard on the Island with the team’s new captain.

Al Arbour Returns – The Announcement

The day after the Islanders announced that legendary coach Al Arbour would return to coach Game No. 1,500, Mark Herrmann wrote a piece on the significance and impact that Arbour had on the franchise.

New Orange and Blue
Anna Bratskeir/Newsday – 8/16/07

The Islanders unveiled their new jerseys over the summer and Newsday broke the story with a two-page full-color article written by Anna Bratskeir.


Who Wants to be an Ice Girl?

Every summer the Islanders hold audition for the next season’s Ice Girls squad. This past August, Newsday was there every step of the way.

NYI Blog Box Unveiled – Part 1
Richard Deitsch/ – 10/08/07

Introduced over the summer, the NYI Blog Box was unveiled on opening night at the Nassau Coliseum. Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated’s website was there to take in the action. In a story for, Deitsch describe the Blog Box events from the first game. Click here to read.

The iManiacs

New York Times journalist Vincent M. Mallozzi met the fans who created and run the New York Islanders' official message board IslanderMania. The story ran in a Sunday sports section in October along with a full picture. The article states why the message board was created, how it is maintained and how Islander Mania became the official place for Islanders fans to stop and chat about the Orange and Blue. Making a Difference
Mark Herrmann/Newsday – 10/31/07

During the Islanders’ annual literacy day, Newsday columnist Mark Herrmann followed Mike Comrie and Bruno Gervais to a school in Bethpage and wrote about the experience.

Arbour Meets the Press
George Vecsey/NY Times - 11/04/07

Legendary sports writer George Vecsey of the New York Times wrote an inspiring column on Al Arbour’s return to the Islanders and the impact he had on Ted Nolan, Bobby Nystrom and more. Click here to read.

Getting to Know the Captain

When the Islanders were in Pittsburgh in November, Islanders beat writer Greg Logan chatted with team captain Bill Guerin and discussed a number of issues ranging from his captaincy to his adjustment to his new team and surroundings. 

Islanders Learn Mandarin
Dave Caldwell/NY Times – 12/1/07

Through numerous channels, the Islanders have been breaking into the Chinese market. One of the latest endeavors is complimenting the Islanders FSN broadcast with Chinese broadcasters featured on the SAP option. In his annual holiday season column which gives reasons and stories that there is still some good in the sports world, Mark Herrmann followed Hall of Fame Islander Mike Bossy and his friend Entourage star Kevin Connolly to a holiday shopping event for under privileged children.

Islanders Win Thriller
Dave Caldwell/NY Times – 12/30/07

The Islanders closed out the home portion of their 2007 schedule with an exciting victory over the New Jersey Devils in front of a sold-out Nassau Coliseum. Dave Caldwell of the Times had an excellent game story on the impact Andy Sutton had in this fierce game with his Gordie Howe hat trick. Click here to read.
