Live Updates - Islanders vs. Hurricanes

7:00 p.m. - Nassau Coliseum - Uniondale, NY

Pre-Game
Rick DiPietro getting the start in goal tonight, if you haven't heard. That's his second nod this season, and the first since Jan. 25 at Boston.

1st Period:
1:18: Jordan Staal puts the Islanders on the game's first power play. Slashing is the call.

2:48: Frans Nielsen takes a nice feed in front and makes it 1-0. On the power play. Josh Bailey with the pass out of the corner. That's Nielsen's first of the year. Hamonic with the secondary assist.

13:42: Carolina ties it at 1-1 off a deflected point shot. Jamie McBain fired a slap shot that definitely hit something. Now the play is under review - possibly a kick-in.

13:42: Goal stands, and it's Tim Wallace who gets credit.

16:43: TV Timeout following a deflected shot in the Carolina zone. Shots: NYI 10 CAR 6.

End 1st: NYI 1 CAR 1. Shots: NYI 12 CAR 6.

2nd Period
0:16: Kyle Okposo to the box for hooking, and the fifth-ranked Isles PK goes to work.

1:04: Great clear by Brian Strait springs Matt Martin on a semi-breakaway. He gets tripped from behind by Tim Brent. Could have been a penalty shot, but instead Brent goes to the box and we're 4-on-4.

1:18: Lubomir Visnovsky gets nailed for hooking. And it's 4-on-3 for 58 seconds.

3:18: All the manpower shifting is done, and nobody scored. Still 1-1. Shots: NYI 16 CAR 10

5:23: Islanders get a quick PP goal with the first unit and it's 2-1. That was a third opportunity in front of Ward. Matt Moulson dug at the puck, but it looked like Tavares swept in and made the difference. If it's #91, it's his seventh in the last eight games. Visnovsky's point shot set it up.

5:52: A quick play at the other end and Jeff Skinner ties it at 2-2 off the rush. Shot came from the high slot, through traffic, right off a broken play.

7:46: Moulson was all alone at the back door, dropped to his knee and powered a one-timer past Cam Ward to give the Isles a 3-2 lead. Pass came from Brad Boyes, who created the play with some great work behind the net. Power play problems? What power play problems? Islanders are 3-for-3 on the man advantage.

9:58: DiPietro with a solid save on Eric Staal coming down the wing to keep this 3-2. Shots: NYI 20 CAR 13

13:42: Finally a break in play after the Isles were pinned in their own zone for a while. DiPietro with a handful of big saves on a Carolina power play. Shots: NYI 21 CAR 18

End 2nd: NYI 3 CAR 2. Shots: NYI 24 CAR 20

3rd Period
0:30: Carolina scores to make it 3-3. Looked like Jiri Tlusty off a second chance rebound. This game is starting to have the feel of the 5-4 overtime win against New Jersey from last week.

4:05: Icing called on Islanders after a long time in the defensive zone. Timeout Islanders.

5:33: Carolina scores off a crazy bounce in front to take a 4-3 lead. A centering attempt went off the upper body of a backchecking Travis Hamonic and over DiPietro's shoulder. That's the definition of a bad break.

9:09: Another deflection through traffic and the Hurricanes lead 5-3. Tlusty's second of the day, but Eric Staal may have touched it on the way in. Just another bad break for the home team.

11:32: Islanders fourth power play tally keeps this game interesting. 5-4 now. They're not going anywhere. Visnovsky with a shot from the right wing boards changed direction on the way in. Boyes and Streit get the assists. Islanders are 4-for-4 on the job.

13:50: And power play number five is coming up. Eric Staal going away for a little while for a trip behind Ward.

15:50: Not a ton of chances on the power play, and the Islanders are 4-for-5. Shots: NYI 27 CAR 27

18:00: DiPietro freezes the puck and there will be a draw in the Islanders zone. Interested to see how long before Capuano calls for the extra attacker.
