1:05: A 2-on-1 for Carolina results in a rebound goal from Jiri Tlusty. Alexander Semin had the original shot from the right circle, which Evgeni Nabokov stopped. But he couldn't get through Eric Staal in the crease to cover up the rebound, and Tlusty swept in and deposited it in the back of the net. 1-0 Hurricanes.
5:37: Islanders take their first penalty of the match. Andrew MacDonald gets whistled for interference.
6:36: Ryan Murphy sets up Jordan Staal on the power play for his first of the season. Nathan Gerbe with the secondary assist. Murphy pump-faked a shot and made a diagonal pass to the left circle for Staal, who finished the play before Nabokov could get to the other post. 2-0 Hurricanes.
10:52: Hurricanes get a 2-on-0, and Nabokov slides left to shut the door. Tuomo Ruutu passed to Riley Nash, who couldn't beat Nabokov. Matt Carkner, trying to break up the pass, collided with Nabokov on the play, and Nabokov remained down for a while as the trainer tended to him. After a couple minutes, the Islanders netminder gets up and will remain in the game.
13:37: After the Islanders are unable to clear the puck, Jeff Skinner gets behind the Islanders D, receives a pass and backhands one top shelf to make it 3-0 Carolina.
15:39: John Tavares is sentenced to two minutes in the box for slashing. Hurricanes are 1-for-1 on the power play.

Semin made a nice saucer pass over the d-man's stick to Tlusty, who beat Nabokov five-hole.
11:52: Isles head to the power play. Skinner called for hooking, and the home team will try to claw their way back into this one.
13:19: Frans Nielsen scores a scrappy goal in front after Tavares just threw the puck on net. Nobody could control the puck, Moulson and Okposo got pieces of it, and eventually it wound up on Nielsen's stick in the slot. Islanders bring it back to 4-2.
16:56: Delay of game penalty coming against Carolina. Islanders still trail by two, so this one is obviously crucial. 3:04 remaining in regulation.
