Live Updates - Islanders vs. Devils

3:00 p.m. - Nassau Coliseum - Uniondale, NY

Islanders wearing black alternate jerseys for the first time this season. Johan Hedberg is getting the start for New Jersey.

Easily my favorite obscure note of the day, courtesy of team statistician Eric Hornick:

"23 Super Bowl Sundays ago (1990) was the last time the Isles played at home on Super Bowl Sunday. They faced today’s opponent—the Devils. And oh yes, the 49ers won the Super Bowl … in New Orleans."

1st Period

1:59: Casey Cizikas going to the box for interference. Islanders have No. 1 PK (96.0%) in the league.

3:29: That power play ends prematurely as Michael Grabner gets tripped by Andy Greene. We'll have 30 seconds of 4-on-4.

5:29: No harm done for either side on the power play. Both teams 0-for-1 on the advantage. Shots: NYI 2 NJD 1

5:55: Islanders going right back to the power play. Dainius Zubrus is getting four-minutes for hi-sticking.

6:38: Matt Moulson gets 2 for tripping. That will break up the power play. Isles will be on the advantage for 1:17 when Moulson comes out.

15:58: Hedberg robs Grabner on a one-timer from Boyes after a 3-on-2 rush. Still scoreless. Shots: NYI 8 NJD 4

End 1st: 0-0. Shots: NYI 10 NJD 6.

2nd Period:
2:46: First fight of the night. Matt Carkner and Krys Barch. Carkner landed a bunch early, before fatigue set in for both fighters. Barch got Carkner's helmet off near the end with a solid left, but it looked to be the only one he connected on. Barch also gets 2 for unsportsmanlike, being served by Steve Bernier.

8:18: Adam Larsson going to the box for interference. Islanders are 0-for-5 on the power play so far. Shots: NYI 10 NJD 11

16:41: Anton Volchenkov is the latest in the Devils' conga line to the penalty box. Hooking. Islanders are 0-for-6 on the man advantage. Shots: NYI 14 NJD 13. Today's game is the complete antithesis of Thursday's match between the two teams: Less shots, much tighter defensively.

18:45: Hedberg has made four or five of those blind saves from in tight where the goaltender doesn't see the shot so much as he just relies on sound positioning. Isles 0-for-7 on the PP. Shots: NYI 17 NJD 13

End 2nd: Game still 0-0. Shots: NYI 17 NJD 14.

3rd Period:
5:06: Hedberg makes another save to keep it scoreless. This one following a nice dangle from John Tavares to get to the slot.

7:32: Andrew MacDonald going to the sin bin for a hook. Devils are 0-for-1 on the PP tonight. Shots: NYI 18 NJD 18

8:07: Michael Grabner robbed by a sliding pad save on a breakaway. Great save. Brian Strait broke up a pass at the blue line to create the chance. Grabner gets breakaways like he's playing a 90s video game. New Jersey calls its timeout.

9:26: Whoa Nabby. Islanders goaltender just robbed David Clarkson from the left circle to keep it scoreless.

9:36: Crowd erupts into "Nabby" chant. Nabokov has 20 saves, including a couple of big ones before this last whistle. We're skating 4-on-4 (Henrique and Hamonic go to box for matching roughing minors)

14:17: Brian Strait to the box for charging. TV timeout gives both sides a chance to game plan a bit.

16:06: Devils score off the stick of Steve Bernier, 1-0. Shot from the point was stopped by Nabokov, but Bernier picked up the rebound.

17:16: Devils score again and it's 2-0. Bernier again.
