Live Updates - Islanders vs. Capitals

1:00 p.m. - Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - Uniondale, NY

Lubomir Visnovsky is back and expected to be in the lineup. David Ullstrom is back in the lineup for Eric Boulton. On Washington's side, Philipp Grubbauer is getting his first NHL start between the pipes, while Braden Holtby will back him up.

1st Period
10:02: Nabokov makes a save on Eric Fehr from the left circle. Not much action in this one yet. Colin McDonald has the lone scoring chance for the Isles but we're scoreless. Shots: NYI 3 WSH 4.

10:46: Isles get on the scoreboard on a great 2-on-1 play by Josh Bailey and Frans Nielsen. Nielsen picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and charged in the Capitals zone. He deked around the defenseman and slid a pass across to Bailey, who chipped it off Grubbauer to give the Isles a 1-0 lead.

14:23: Tripping minor to Steve Oleksy, so the Isles will go to the power play. It's been good this year, and the Caps' PK hasn't been. The crowd thinks there should have been about four other penalties before this. Shots: NYI 7 WSH 5

16:29: Three shots on that power play, but nobody scores. Puck in the Capitals zone almost the whole time. Referees stop play as Matt Martin gets in the way of a shot and limps off the ice. Still 1-0 Islanders.

End 1st: NYI 1 WSH 0. Shots: NYI 12 WSH 8.

2nd Period
0:48: Radek Martinek gets called for holding the stick, and the Capitals will go to their first power play of the day.

1:26: Story of the season, as a loose puck pinballs around, is headed wide, but glances off Travis Hamonic's skate and into the back of the net. We're tied at 1-1. After an autopsy of that crazy play, Joel Ward gets credit for the goal. John Carlson and Mike Ribeiro with the helpers.

6:04: Mathieu Perrault just had a chance from the slot but he clanked it off the crossbar.

6:58: Islanders going to the man advantage as Fehr is escorted off for two minutes for holding. Isles are 0-for-1.

10:03: Casey Cizikas scores on a wrister blocker-side to give New York a 2-1 advantage. Colin McDonald forced a turnover at center ice and the puck wound up on Matt Martin's stick. He dished to Cizikas on the right side and the rookie scored his third of the season.

13:28: Stoppage in play. Marty Reasoner just had a chance on a partial breakaway but Grubbauer got a piece. Still 2-1. Shots: NYI 21 WSH 16.

End 2nd: NYI 2 WSH 1. Shots: NYI 26 WSH 19.

3rd Period
3:00: Islanders have steadily controlled the play over the last several minutes. Shots: NYI 30 WSH 20.

7:09: A quick tic-tac-toe play winds up in the back of the Islanders net. Nicklas Backstrom's third goal of the season was a one-timed snipe over Nabokov. It's 2-2 now, with the ice tilting in the Caps favor. Fehr and Karl Alzner with the assists.

8:48: Mike Ribeiro is guilty of a hi-stick (double-minor), and he'll go off for four minutes. Islanders will get their third/fourth power plays of the afternoon.

12:13: The Islanders tired them down, wore them out, and finally John Tavares' 15th of the season with 35 seconds remaining on the man advantage puts the home team back on top, 3-2. Brad Boyes had the initial shot, and Lubomir Visnovsky gets the second assist.

12:35: Jeff Schultz gets called for a hi-stick on Michael Grabner, as the Isles winger lays on the ice for a minute. This is going to be another four-minute double-minor. Isles are 1-for-4 on the job. Washington penalty killers have to be tired after that last one.

15:00: Islanders are testing Grubbauer but nothing in so far. Shots: NYI 42 WSH 22.

15:32: A nice goal by Matt Moulson makes it 4-2. Once again on the back-end of a long power play. Beautiful play for the tap-in.

15:32/12:43: John Tavares gets credit for a goal from minutes ago. Originally that play was waved off but there was no stoppage in play in the interim. They're rewinding the clock to show 7:17, instead of 4:28 that was on there when Moulson netted one. Essentially, Islanders up 4-2. It's Tavares' 100th career goal, and we're going to have two more minutes on the man advantage, because it was scored during the first minor. No goal for Moulson.

14:43: Second power play ends. Shots: NYI 43 WSH 22.

16:50: Colin McDonald gets called for hooking.

16:59: Frans Nielsen breaks in down the wing shorthanded and buries it top shelf over Grubbauer's glove. He had Grabner as an option on the left side. 5-2 Islanders.

18:18: Washington is going to have a 32 second 5-on-3 as Martin played the puck during a line change. Delay of game.
