Live Updates - Islanders at Devils

7:00 p.m. - Prudential Center - Newark, NJ

The Islanders played the Devils four times in the first 15 games on the schedule, and once in the final 33. This is the one.

Big news today out of Isles camp is the arrival of 2009 draft pick Anders Lee. He won't play tonight, but he did skate with the team this morning after signing an Entry-Level Contract.

1st Period
0:52: Before most of our smart phones got the "Game has started" notification, Josh Bailey lets the crowd at Prudential Center know. He makes it 1-0 after a 2-on-1 with Frans Nielsen. Nielsen backhanded a pass across to Bailey, who deked Brodeur way out of position before going backhand.

7:14: Little wrister by Travis Hamonic from the top of the zone makes its way through traffic and past Brodeur's glove. 2-0 Isles. That play was right off the faceoff. Assist from Frans Nielsen. Timeout Devils.

11:22: Matt Martin and Tom Kostopoulos drop the gloves near the Islanders blue line. That was quick. Martin landed two blows, with the second dropping Kostopoulos to the ice hard. Trainer is out tending to the Devils' right wing, but he's skating off under his own power.

14:01: We have a TV timeout. 2-0 Isles. Shots: NYI 6 NJD 2. Isles defense has kept the chances to the outside, and generated a few opportunities the other way off the rush.

18:45: Devils crowd just gave us some local flavor with a pretty well rehearsed "Islanders are not very good" chant (I'm paraphrasing here). I give it an 8 in terms of both choreography and vulgarity. Let's just say I wouldn't jump in a chant like that if I was at the game with my mother.

End 1st: NYI 2 NJD 0. Shots: NYI 7 NJD 4.

2nd Period
4:00: Islanders going more chasing of the puck than they'd like. Only two shots of the period go to the home team, but the Devils have had a few opportunities that just missed the target.

4:40: Devils thought they scored one off a rebound. David Clarkson's initial attempt was blocked, but the second chance apparently went off the post with an open net behind Evgeni Nabokov. The players on the ice celebrated until they realized that the light never went off. They'll probably look at that one whenever the whistle blows again.

8:01: Alexei Ponikarovsky scores on a backhand tap in from Patrik Elias and it's 2-1. Elias came down the left wing and slid a pass through the Islanders defenseman to Ponikarovsky's stick right outside the crease. Nabokov went side-to-side, and it looked like the puck went five-hole off his pads. Travis Zajac with the second helper.

10:15: A break in play, and a quick look at the scoreboard indicates a 10-3 edge in shots for New Jersey this period. Total shots: NYI 10 NJD 14.

14:59: The game's first minor goes to the well-disciplined Thomas Hickey. He's given 2 minutes for tripping.

16:59: Isles kill it off. Devils are 0-for-1 on the job.

End 2nd: NYI 2 NJD 1. Shots: NYI 12 NJD 16.

3rd Period
8:41: Stephan Gionta gets two minutes for hooking. Islanders going to their first PP of the night.

9:13: John Tavares gives the Islanders an insurance marker on the man advantage and it's 3-1. Lubomir Visnovsky crept down the left wing boards and threw a low shot off Brodeur's pads. Tavares was perfectly positioned at the far post and easily put home the rebound. That's #91's 22nd of the season, and ninth on the power play. Depending on what happens in other games tonight, that should give him sole possession on second in the NHL in the PPG department (Alex Ovechkin has 12).

16:39: This one's just humming along. 3-1 in favor of the visitors. Shots: NYI 20 NJD 21.

16:39: Devils mascot has a cannon of an arm, throwing t-shirts in the crowd. Wow. I hear there's a QB situation with the New York Jets, and we may have the answer just down the road.

17:28: We're going to skate 4-on-4 for a bit as Andrew MacDonald and Elias each get 2 for slashing.

17:44: Brodeur out of his net for an extra skater.

19:02: Isles called for icing. This is when you use your timeout, and Jack Capuano does to give his guys a rest.
