Life Lessons Taught At Michael A. Stokes Elementary

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

This morning, Michael A. Stokes Elementary of Levittown started the day with a real treat.  The school was visited by Islander alumni and fan favorite Steve Webb, along with his friends Valerie the Ice Girl and everyone’s favorite mascot, Sparky.  Over the course of two assemblies, the all purpose room was packed with students ranging from kindergartners to 5th graders.  The students were thrilled to have Steve and the gang visit their school and showed their Islander pride by wearing their Islander jerseys and shirts.  Before the first assembly even began, the all purpose room was filled with a Coliseum-level “Let’s Go Islanders” chant.  During the assembly, the children got to see a video of the current Islanders explaining the basic concepts of teamwork.  They also go to participate in a fun activity where students working together put goalie equipment on one of their peers while a teacher struggled to put all the equipment on by themselves.  Steve then had a great conversation with the students about classmates being the same as teammates, making them someone you can rely on, help out when they are in trouble, respect, and grow with.  The students had a great day and when they returned to class, they were all given a great Islanders gift bag.  For more information about how you can get the We’re All Islander school assembly program to your school, call (516) 501-6780.
