New Islanders forward Zenon Kenopka sat with newyorkislanders.com to answer fans questions from Twitter. Here are his answers.
What are you looking forward to the most in the upcoming season with the Isles?Making steps towards making the playoffs and bringing the Islanders back to their great tradition.
ask Konopka what he liked most about playing with the Syracuse Crunch...does he think they are the best fans in the AHL? They are the most passionate fans. I really enjoyed the 'blue collar' atmosphere there.
Konopka, which team to you love to hate the most and why? (smiles) I guess now it's the Rangers and the Flyers with a sprinkling of the Devils. I am looking forward to the rivalries.
How excited are you to play with the Isles and guys like Gillies this season?I'm excited about Gillies because of the warrior that he is, and he is also a good friend. It will be fun to cause trouble for other opponents.
Hey Zenon, welcome to Long Island, my question is were you excited when you heard that the Islanders had signed you?Very excited, and excited for the opportunity to play with the great tradition. There are so many young talented players here.
Heard you have a pretty sweet knuckle-ball, did you ever consider playing pro baseball growing up? I threw out the first pitch at the Tampa Bay Rays game. I played baseball growing up, don't know if I'd be good enough to play, but it was good enough for the first ptich at the Rays game. Longoria had to jump and get it. (Check out this video of Konopka throwing out the first pictch. He chose a knuckleball)
A quesiton for Mr. Konopka. Just wondering, do you really believe a fight will energize a crowd more than scoring a goal would?Depends on what the situation is. There are variables involved with both situations. If you're losing 7-1 late in the third period and you score as opposed to that situation and you fight some one, it's more exciting. An OT goal I would have go in the other direction. That would absolutely energize the crowd. Time and place matter.
Who is your toughest opponent when dropping the gloves? And who do you respect the most out of them? Ever? The toughest is Boogard. I respect him a lot too. He's a fair fighter who respects the game.
You were very productive in juniors. now that you have a 1 way contract, will you fight a little less and get more points? All I care about is winning. So, whatever is going to help the New York Islanders win hockey games, I will do. I was on a 1-way last year and I fought 33 times. It's not about the contract.
Zenon, in your first game agains the Rangers, will you set the tone early for the rivalry in 2011. Will you step up to the Boogeyman?Everyone has a job to do on the ice. Most important for us is to make sure we win those games against the Rangers. Until your are inside a game, you never know what is going to happen.
Will you be seeing familiar faces in the Islanders locker room? Any guys here you've played with beforen?I played with Parenteau for three years and Gillies for two. Will be a lot of fun to see and hang out with them again.
How much did he enjoy his time here in Portland in the AHL?I enjoyed it quite a bit. Making the run in the playoffs was special honor with a special team. The team and the city are both close to my heart and I will never forget it.
