On September 17th, Jackie Abatecola – someone who’s always a constant positive light in the lives of everyone she meets – found out that she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. While there is never a good time to receive this news, the timing could not have been more tragic; she was planning on marrying her best friend just 24 days later on October, 10th 2015. It was with a heavy heart the Jackie and her fiancé, Mike, had to postpone their wedding while she is in the hospital undergoing treatment for what is sure to be her most triumphant battle yet.
In the spirit of being positive in the most difficult of situations, Jackie’s friends and family have come together as one strong force to spread awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and the results have been nothing short of amazing. On what was supposed to be Jackie and Mike’s wedding day, there was a Light the Night Walk taking place at Siena College to support LLS.
In the three weeks before the walk, Jackie’s support team has raised over $32,500 to become the top fundraising team in the Albany area, and her support page has reached thousands. This is a true testament to how incredible of a person Jackie is and how much she is loved. She has become an unofficial endorser of LLS, and is so honored to help in any way she can.
While there is a long road ahead, we know that once Jackie comes out of this fight, she will be even stronger, with more pep in her already enthusiastic and full-of-life step, and her wedding day will be even that much more of a celebration.
