The New York Islanders are expanding their presence eastward on Long Island as the team is opening a new Pro Shop in Suffolk County this Sunday, Oct. 30.
To celebrate the grand opening at the Dix Hills Ice Rink in Huntington, special guests will be dropping by all day long. Travis Hamonic
and Matt Martin
will participate in a clinic with local children. Islanders Ice Girls and Sparky the Dragon will join fans in a free, open skate and the pro shop if offering exclusive discounts.
“A big part of our presence in Dix Hills is that we are going to be running clinics for kids that are involved in the house leagues there, Islanders Pro Shop Manager Tim Murray said. “Players are going to come out and go skate with local kids and work with them on shooting, passing and other hockey skills,”
Not to be confused with the recently opened team store at Nassau Coliseum, the Pro Shop at Dix Hills will primarily offer equipment such as skates (both figure and hockey), sticks and pads as well as sharpening services. Being an Islanders fan, while encouraged, is not a requirement to shop.
“The people that are migrating into the team store are someone who is a fan or shopping for a fan,” Murray said. “When going to the pro shop, it’s because you know we have that new Bauer stick or you know we have that top skate. We have the best equipment at every step of the way for beginners, elite players and everyone in between. The bonus is that you are dealing with the Islanders.”
The team is excited about venturing into Suffolk County and reaching out to young hockey fans. A grassroots connection between fans and players is one way to generate younger fans’ interest in the team.
“We have a partnership with the town of Huntington to have the pro shop at the rink and to help grow hockey in the community,” Murray said.
The pro shop will be open on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
