ISLANDERS AT SCHOOL

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders
The New York Islanders are dedicated to being involved in their local community and take pride in their elementary school level educational programs. As a result, the Islanders@School Program is back for its second season.

Designed to get students involved in the sport of hockey, the program gives the Islanders the ability to be in more classrooms throughout the year. For the first time, the Islanders are holding a competition which will give 12 lucky elementary schools the chance to receive a visit from select Islanders players in November as part of their Islanders School Day program.

The winning schools will receive a visit from Islanders players and a school assembly where the players will share stories about themselves, focusing their speeches on their life experiences that have taught them why it is important to go to school, to work hard, to stay active and how reading has affected their lives. After the assembly, the players will participate a brief question and answer session with the students and will sign some autographs.

To participate in the competition, a teacher, school administrator or member of the Parent Teachers Association will need to fill out an entry form by visiting the Islanders@School website at www.islandersatschool.com. Submissions for Islanders School Day will be accepted through October 1, 2010 and registration is free.

After completing the brief information section, applicants will be asked to write a brief essay on why their school would benefit from the Islanders School Day visit. They will also be required to share how the school plans to show their Islanders spirit, which could be decorating the assembly hall with Islanders colors or having their students dress in blue and orange on the day of the assembly.

Time is running out, so don’t miss your chance for this opportunity at your elementary school!

Remember to visit the Islanders@School website for all other Islanders educational opportunities including the Islanders@School assemblies on teamwork and the Blades for Grades program. There are also Islanders focused lesson plans which have a variety of lessons for students in grades three through six which follow New York State Curriculum guidelines.
