From Day One, the Islanders knew they were getting more than just a longtime NHL goal scorer and leader in Bill Guerin. They knew they were also getting a person who cared about the community. That was none more evident than on Sunday morning, when Guerin served as celebrity spokesman for and announced his partnership with the March of Dimes at their March For Babies walk at Eisenhower Park.
Guerin arrived before 8 am to meet with the teams that were participating in the walk that raised money and awareness for the fight against birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Guerin also served as motivational speaker for the over 1,000 walk participants
"I can’t think of anything more heroic than to help save a baby’s life," Guerin told the participants. "I am the proud father of four healthy children and I know that all parents don’t share that same joy. That is why I am partnering with the March of Dimes. Over the next year, the New York Islanders organization and I will promise to do whatever we can to help. I look forward to being your teammate."
Guerin joined his new teammates for the walk, who were proud to be helping a worthy cause alongside the Islanders' captain.
"I want to thank the Islanders and Bill Guerin for coming down today to show their support," said March of Dimes representative Claire Paola. "We look forward to the continued support of the Islanders and Bill this upcoming season. We had a great event."
