Islanders open at home against Boston

(7 p.m. ET, TV: FSNY 2 | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) The Islanders return to the Nassau Coliseum for their home opener tonight to face-off against the Boston Bruins.

Thursday night the Islanders won in stunning fashion knocking off a formidable foe in Anaheim by the score of 5-4 in a shootout.

The Islanders took a 3-2 lead going into the second on goals by Mike York, Trent Hunter and Chris Simon in the span of 1:46 of the second period. It was the first goal of the season for all three players.

In the third period, after the Islanders fell behind 4-3, Alexei Yashin tied the score with just 3:44 left in the period. Mike York then won it in the sixth round of the shootout. Mike Dunham made 46 saves in regulation and five in the shootout to record his first win as an Islander. Ted Nolan also earned his first win as head coach of the Islanders.

The Islanders and Bruins meet for the first time during the 2006-07 regular season after facing each other twice during the exhibition season in Moncton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Boston won both games. They will face each other three more times during the regular season.

Off-season acquisition Viktor Kozlov leads the Islanders in points with four, including two goals. Brendan Witt leads the team in plus/minus (+3) and penalty minutes (18). Yashin, who has scored two goals and added an assist, ranks first on the team in shots with 18.

The Bruins come into tonight's game losers of four out of their first five games, including their previous, a 3-2 loss in overtime to St. Louis on Thursday. Defenseman Zdeno Chara leads the team in points with five all assists. Hannu Toivonen and Tim Thomas have split the goaltending duties in the early going with Toivonen earning the lone victory, a 3-2 win over Tampa Bay.
