Game Day Updates 10/17/13

by Travis Betts / New York Islanders
The New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers will play tonight at Nassau Coliseum. The Isles hit the ice at 10:30 for morning skate.

10:25: Optional skate for the Islanders this morning. These usually go pretty quick. Edmonton will hit the ice at 11:30.

10:40: Some photos from the ice:

10:52: Jack Capuano finished with the media. Evgeni Nabokov will start in goal. Matt Donovan and Colin McDonald will go back in the lineup, while Matt Carkner, Eric Boulton and Brock Nelson are out.

11:12: Capuano, on what he expects from Edmonton tonight: "It's a track meet when you play these guys. They're young, they're fast. They've got D that get up in the play. You never know how the game is going to go when the puck drops. Obviously, you don't want a wide open game."

11:16: Matt Donovan, on what he gained from sitting out the last two games: "I think just watching overall and thinking to myself what I need to do to get back in the lineup and play well and make the team better. [Being scratched] pushed you that much harder. I'm here now, and I don't want to get sent back down, so it makes me want to work that much harder to get back in the lineup and stay in the NHL."

11:20: Peter Regin, on if holding leads is a concern for the Islanders: "I don't think so. It was a fluke shot, that last one that went in (Tuesday vs. Buffalo). That's what happens sometimes. It's an important thing to do, when you have the lead, to be able to hold it and to take two points in those games. That's something we'll have to work on as this season goes on."

11:34: The Oilers are on the ice now. Seems to be the full group out there. We'll have updates from their coach and players in a little bit.

12:40: Edmonton's Jordan Eberle, on the Oilers' play this season: "We really feel strongly that we've been playing well. We've been outshooting opponents, outplaying opponents. We just haven't gotten the bounces and the wins. I believe when things start turning the other way, and we start getting those bounces and saves, that the wins are going to come more often and this team is going to take the turn."

12:46: Ryan Smyth, on what the Oilers have to do to take the next step: "Stay with it. Stay positive. We're not too far off. It's just a matter of doing the little things that make a difference, like getting the puck in deep at certain points of the game - the beginnings and ends of periods, especially - and playing the full 60 minutes.

12:51: Oilers coach Dallas Eakins, on the choice to start Devan Dubnyk tonight in goal: "I think he's going to get in there and battle and try to get through this start that he's had. I'm not going to tip-toe around it, and neither is Devan. He hasn't played as well as we had hoped. I talked to him this morning. He seems to be in a great frame of mind. He's ready to go out there and battle for his teammates."

12:55: Eakins, on Edmonton's resiliency the last couple of games: "I don't like standing here and saying, 'We played great but we lost.' We have to find a way to get on the other side of the ledger. We are seeing good things with our group. We're seeing a group that's fighting. They're not turning away from it. They're in the fight. That's the biggest thing for me right now. If we can have that fight, have some players step up, then this can get turned around very quickly."

Check back at game time for live updates from tonight's Islanders-Oilers matchup. Puck drop is just after 7:00 p.m.
