Josef Vasicek brings his NYI-leading eight goals to tonight’s matchup against Montreal at the Nassau Coliseum

When you ask Josef Vasicek if he considers himself a goal scorer, he'll politely say that he thinks of himself as an all-around player, but not a goal scorer. It might be hard to fool people that he's not a goal scorer considering he leads the Islanders with eight goals in 17 games.

On Friday against New Jersey, just 16 games into the season, Vasicek topped his goal output from last season, but didn't stop there. In the next contest, he used his long reach, size and speed to barrel down the left wing and fire a wrist shot over Henrik Lundqvist's shoulder for his eighth goal of the season and second game-winner in as many games.

What may be most astonishing is that Vasicek has produced despite limited power play time (44 seconds per game) and just a shade over 14:00 of total ice time per game. However, that time has slowly increased since Vasicek started showing signs of his old self, when he scored a career-high 19 goals and 45 points in 2003-04 with Carolina.

"This is a quality kid with great ability and skill," said Ted Nolan, whose Islanders face the Montreal Canadiens tonight at the Nassau Coliseum. "He's 6-4, can skate, shoot and has great vision on the ice. He competes, so that was a great signing for us in the off-season."

Playing alongside Miroslav Satan since training camp, Vasicek has demonstrated he's more than just a power forward who works well along the boards. He also can rush the puck as well as anyone on the team.

In Monday's contest against the Rangers, Vasicek had the best end-to-end rushes of the game. Starting in his own end, the Czech forward skated around three Rangers before powering to the front of the net with the puck. He didn't score, but the Rangers quickly discovered how much speed Vasicek can generate in full stride.

With goals in three consecutive games and points in five straight, Vasicek will look to extend his streaks tonight against Montreal.
