Michael Dal Colle and the Oshawa Generals won the Mastercard Memorial Cup on Sunday night, skating to a 2-1 OT win over the Kelowna Rockets.
Rookie Anthony Cirelli scored both goals in the win, including the championship goal 1:28 into OT, as the Generals won their fifth Memorial Cup in franchise history and first since 1990. Oshawa swept the round-robin portion of the tournament, clinching a berth in the final. In total, the Generals went 4-0.
Dal Colle finished the tournament with five points (two goals, three assists), tying Tobias Lindberg for the Generals team lead. Dal Colle set a career-high with 42 goals this season, scoring 93 points in 56 games and finished second in OHL playoff scoring with 31 points (eight goals, 23 assists) in 21 games.
Dal Colle’s win marks the second straight season an Islanders prospect won the top prize in junior hockey, as Griffin Reinhart won the 2014 Memorial Cup with the Edmonton Oil Kings.
