That’s not a bad thing though, as the Islanders entered 2016 as the second-place team in the Eastern Conference. They are 1-1 in the New Year, but a 6-5 win over the high-powered Dallas Stars on Sunday is a big feather in the cowboy hat. All in all, the Islanders went 3-1-0 last week, scoring 16 goals over the four games, which is likely what Jack Capuano envisioned when he shook up his lines. Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo had five points (2G, 3A) each, while John Tavares and Anders Lee each had four (2G, 2A). Nick Leddy is currently on a five-game point streak (1G, 4A).
GOALS OF THE WEEK:
There were a lot to choose from this week, as the Islanders scored 16 goals over four games. We chose two and asked you to vote for the top goal:
Frans Nielsen vs. Toronto
The first is Frans Nielsen, who burns through the Leafs defense before pulling a nifty move on Jonathan Bernier. A textbook case of keeping your feet moving vs. being caught standing still. Nick Leddy – who’s on a five-game point streak – feeds Nielsen in stride and in an instant, he’s around Dion Phaneuf. In alone, Nielsen knows what to do, pulling to his backhand in tight and tucking it through Bernier’s five-hole.
Cal Clutterbuck vs. Dallas
If Nielsen had the deke of the week with his subtle backhand, Cal Clutterbuck had the best shot. Clutterbuck, who returned to the game after taking a big hit from Dallas’ Jason Demers, rifles this shot past Kari Lehtonen, curling off the boards before snapping it home. Don’t blink, you might miss it. Extra points for Clutterbuck’s celly by the bench. Not sure what it is, but we like it.
