KITCHENER, Ont. (September 6, 2001) – Hurricanes’ prospects Mike Zigomanis and Mark Kosick scored two goals apiece as the Carolina Hurricanes Rookies defeated the host Toronto Maple Leafs Rookies 5-4 at Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Thursday night. Keith Aucoin, who signed a contract to play for the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League affiliate Lowell Lock Monsters this summer, had a four-point night for the Hurricanes in the victory, notching a goal and three assists.

Zigomanis, selected by Carolina in the second round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, got Carolina on the board at 7:25 of the first period. Zigomanis took a pass from Michigan State product John Nail and fired it over the left shoulder of Toronto goaltender J.F. Racine to even the score at one after the Maple Leafs had scored first. Kosick, an eighth round selection in the 1998 draft out of the University of Michigan, gave Carolina its first lead of the game just over a minute later. Kosick took a pass from Aucoin on a two-on-one short-handed break to make it 2-1.

Toronto’s Joe Talbot beat Carolina goaltender Rob Zepp at 11:14 of the first period to even the score before Kosick and Aucoin again hooked up to give Carolina the lead. Aucoin found the Victoria, B.C. native in the slot and Kosick made good, firing the puck off the near post to beat Racine and make it 3-2.

Aucoin, who scored 56 points (26g, 30a) in 28 games for Norwich University in 2000-01, tallied his first goal of the tournament at 1:49 of the second period off of an assist by Kosick. Aucoin then served Zigomanis at 12:32 of the second, who flipped a wrister past Racine for Carolina’s final tally of the game.

Hurricanes goaltender Rob Zepp, a fourth-round draft pick in the 2001 Draft, stopped 32 Toronto shots to earn the victory.
