REVIEW: Ottawa Senators 5, HURRICANES 1

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

KANATA, ONTARIO-- Playing their third road game in four nights and fifth consecutive game away from the Entertainment and Sports Arena, the Carolina Hurricanes saw their three-game win streak snapped with a 5-1 defeat to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.

"We just came out flat," Carolina center Ron Francis said. "We didn't have it at all tonight. The few chances we did have, we couldn't convert, and they kept coming at us hard. Give them credit, they played a great game and they caught us on an off night."

"I hope we were tired because we looked terrible otherwise," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "We were so bad out there. I can't even evaluate our goalie on that game. We were horrible in front of him."

Maurice tied Jack Evans' franchise record by coaching his 374th game.

Nolan Pratt scored Carolina's lone goal 82 seconds into the third period, banging in his own rebound for his third of the season. The goal marked the 27th time this season that a member of the Hurricanes blueline had registered a goal, compared to 15 all of last season.

Veteran backup Mark Fitzpatrick stopped 40 shots, including 22 in the third period, in his first appearance of the season for Carolina. He was recalled from Cincinnati of the IHL on Friday.

Fitzpatrick went 11-11-1 with a 2.57 goals-against average and four shutouts in the IHL. He was recalled when Arturs Irbe's backup, Eric Fichaud, was claimed off waivers by Montreal.
