REVIEW: HURRICANES 4, St. Louis Blues 2

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

Jeff O'Neill posted three points (2g, 1a) and Ron Francis (0g, 2a) and Sean Hill (1g, 1a) each tallied two points as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the St. Louis Blues, 4-2, at the Kiel Center.

Hurricanes goaltender Arturs Irbe improved his record to 10-6-7 by making 28 saves, including nine in the critical third period. Irbe, who served as backup to Eric Fichaud in the Hurricanes' last game in Colorado, is unbeaten in his last six starts (3-0-3).

With the win, the club won their first game in St. Louis since defeating the Blues, 4-3, on November 9, 1991 and snapped the Blues' seven-game unbeaten streak at home (5-0-2) this season.

Trailing 1-0 in the first period, defenseman Paul Coffey scored on the power-play with a shot from inside the blueline to tie the score.

Following another first period score from St. Louis, the Hurricanes rebounded with two power-play goals in the second period to take the lead. Sean Hill converted on the team's second power-play opportunity of the night by crashing the net and redirecting a Ron Francis pass past goaltender Roman Turek.

O'Neill registered what proved to be the game-winning goal on the power-play with under a minute remaining in the second period. Francis controlled a Sean Hill blast from the point and poke-checked the puck toward O'Neill who recorded the team's third power-play goal of the night.

O'Neill accounted for the Hurricanes' final goal, recording his 11th goal of the season with three seconds remaining in the game.
