RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Chicago native Bates Battaglia continued his success against his hometown team with a goal and an assist as the Carolina Hurricanes beat Chicago 2-1 Sunday night, snapping the Blackhawks' five-game unbeaten streak.

Battaglia hadn't scored a goal and had just one assist in December -- a span of 10 games -- until getting a goal on the power play in the second period to give the Hurricanes the lead.

Battaglia also had his only hat trick in the NHL last season against the Blackhawks -- a team he rooted for growing up in Chicago.

Ron Francis fed Battaglia for a one-timer from close in for his 1,586th point, moving him within five of passing Phil Esposito for fifth on the NHL's career scoring list.

Battaglia also assisted on Carolina's first goal. The left wing missed a chance at his first three-point game of the season when he hit the post with 15:14 left.

The Blackhawks were 4-0-1 in their last five games, but fell to 0-16 this season when trailing after two periods.

Chicago entered 28th in the league on the power play, but Tony Amonte scored his 18th goal midway through the first with Craig Adams off for boarding.

A minute later, Jeff Daniels scored his first in 38 games dating to February when he lifted a backhander over Jocelyn Thibault's shoulder. Daniels was set up on a great play at the blue line by Battaglia, who sidestepped a Chicago defenseman and warded him off before finding a wide-open Daniels to tie it 1-1.
