NETMINDER WILL SERVE AS BACKUP TO IRBE IN TAMPA BAY
RALEIGH, NC (Jan. 29, 2002) – Jim Rutherford, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced tonight that the team has recalled goaltender Randy Petruk from Florida of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Hurricanes netminder Tom Barrasso left Tuesday night’s game against Buffalo with a groin strain and will not be available for Wednesday’s game in Tampa Bay.
Petruk (5’9’’, 175 lbs.) is 16-10 in regulation decisions with a 2.80 goals against average and a .909 save percentage with the Florida Everblades this season. A fourth-round draft choice of the Colorado Avalanche in 1996, Petruk was acquired by Carolina in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He split last season between Florida and Cincinnati of the International Hockey League. Petruk was 5-7-1 with Florida last season with a 3.31 goals against average. He was 4-3-0 with a 3.29 goals against average with Cincinnati in 2000-01. Petruk has never played or served as backup in an NHL game.
