Goaltenders Daniel Manzato and Justin Peters
were reassigned to Albany today, where they are expected to compete for the River Rats' number one job next season. That leaves Cam Ward
and Michael Leighton as the only netminders left in camp.
Both goaltenders spent most of last season in the ECHL while Michael Leighton was the primary goaltender in Albany. Peters played 11 games with the Rats, posting a 7-3 record with a 2.70 goals-against average, while Manzato lost his only AHL appearance, letting up five goals in a losing effort.
Based on recent performances, it seems like Manzato might have the edge in a starting battle. He posted great ECHL numbers last year for a variety of teams, including a 22-5-6 record and 2.37 GAA with Las Vegas, and in my opinion looked better in camp. It will be interesting to see how that plays out and who would get the call to Raleigh if needed.
As for the Canes' current goaltenders, coach Laviolette said yesterday that he wanted to give both Ward and Leighton a look in tonight's game against Nashville.
