Manderville, Heerema, Svoboda notch goals in 'Canes scrimmage

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 8, 1999 11:01 p.m. EDT - Kent Manderville and 1998 first-round draft choice Jeff Heerema scored goals as the Carolina Hurricanes' White Team edged the Red Team 2-1 in overtime Wednesday in the team's first intrasquad training camp scrimmage.

Manderville, one of the team's top penalty killers, scored the game-winner with an assist from defenseman Mike Rucinski. Heerema sent the game into overtime for the Red Team by scoring at 17:23 of the third period. Jaroslav Svoboda, Carolina's eighth draft pick in '98, scored the Red Team's first goal in the first period.

Minor-leaguer Randy Petruk recorded the win in goal for the White Team. All-star goaltender Arturs Irbe saved all 11 shots he faced in 31 minutes of action for the White Team. Mark Fitzpatrick, who played at Chicago last season, and Eric Fichaud, acquired from Nashville in June, recorded a combined 27 saves for the Red Team.

The Hurricanes are training at TECO Arena in Fort Myers.
