KINGS DEAL 'CANES FIRST ROAD LOSS SINCE DEC. 29, 4-2

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes
LOS ANGELES (FEB. 8, 2001) -- The Carolina Hurricanes dropped their first road game since Dec. 29 at Columbus to the Los Angeles Kings, 4-2 at Staples Center.

At :26 of the second period Bryan Smolinski opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal. Smolinski scored again at 18:00 taking the score to 4-0. Smolinski's teammate Kelly Buchberger scored at 13:02 and 16:01 for the Kings' second and third goals.

"It was the same type of game we played in Carolina (1/20, 6-3 Carolina loss)," said Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice. "We allowed them a shorthanded goal that got them going. I thought we controlled the game up to that point and even after the shorthanded goal, we still have to score goals."

The Hurricanes fought back in the third period as the defense prevented Los Angeles from recording a shot on goal. Carolina out-shot the Kings 27-24 in the game.

Hurricanes center Rod Brind'Amour scored his 13th point (1/18-2/8: 3g, 10a) in the last nine games when found the net on a centering pass from Bates Battaglia.

Battaglia joined Brind'Amour's line when Martin Gelinas left the game in the first period with a concussion and a knee injury after a collision involving a Los Angeles player and line-mate Shane Willis. Gelinas will undergo further evaluation tomorrow to determine his status for Carolina's game Sunday at Anaheim.

At 5:05 of the third period, Captain Ron Francis jammed the puck through the pads of Los Angeles goaltender Jamie Storr on the power play. The goal was Francis' 484th of his NHL career which ties him for 33rd on the all-time goals scored list with Darryl Sittler.

Goaltender Tyler Moss started in his first NHL game since the Hurricanes played at Colorado on Nov. 3 and made his first appearance in net since Dec. 9 at Calgary. Moss stopped 20 of 24 Los Angeles shots on goal.

"I thought he played a good game," said Maurice. "He made a couple of good saves in the first period to keep us in it."

Moss' complete game snapped Arturs Irbe's streak of 40 consecutive starts and 41 consecutive appearances. Both of Irbe's numbers are franchise records.

NOTES: Hurricanes winger Rob DiMaio earned his 200th NHL career point with the second assist on Brind'Amour's goal… Battaglia returned to the Carolina lineup after sitting out the last two games as a healthy scratch… Los Angeles' four second period goals ties a Hurricanes season high for goals allowed in a period (11/26 vs. NSH, 7-4 loss)… Smolinski's shorthanded goal was the 11th allowed by the Hurricanes this season which ties them with Tampa Bay for a league high.
