FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Nov. 11, 2005
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled defenseman Danny Richmond from the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League. The team has placed defenseman Andrew Hutchinson on injured reserve after he suffered a hip injury prior to Carolina’s game against Florida on Nov. 5.
This marks the first call-up to the NHL for Richmond, the 21-year-old Chicago native who the Hurricanes selected with the first pick of the second round (31st overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Richmond has played in all 12 games for Lowell this season, scoring one goal and adding seven assists (8 points) to lead all Lock Monsters defensemen in points. During the 2005 NHL exhibition season, Richmond (6’ 1”, 192 lbs.) played in four of Carolina’s eight games, and recorded a goal and two assists (3 points) while posting a plus-1 plus/minus rating.
In 2004-05, Richmond played his first professional season with Lowell and had four goals, nine assists (13 points) and 139 penalty minutes in 63 regular-season games. In the Lock Monsters’ postseason run, Richmond earned two assists in six games while recording eight penalty minutes. He captained the Hurricanes’ squad at the 2005 Ottawa Senators NHL Rookie Tournament in September, and finished the four-game round robin with two assists and a plus-3 rating.
Hutchinson has played in three regular-season games with the Hurricanes this season without recording a point. He was a healthy extra for Carolina’s nine games from Oct. 12 through Nov. 3 prior to the injury.
The Carolina Hurricanes finish a two-game road trip tonight at Florida (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network) before returning to the RBC Center to face the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday.
