RALEIGH, NC (August 30, 2000) – Jim Cain, President and Chief Operating Officer of the National Hockey League Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has named Doug Piper as Executive Vice President of Business Operations.

“Doug Piper brings a wealth of experience to the Carolina Hurricanes’ day to day business operations,” said Cain. “His success is unparalleled in helping teams in the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association to grow and prosper. We are confident that Doug will strengthen the organization with his innovative approaches to ticket sales and marketing, some of which will be unveiled in the coming days.”

Piper joins the Hurricanes after serving the last five years as Executive Vice President of Business Operations for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League. While in Edmonton, Piper oversaw the sales force that doubled the club’s season ticket base in his first year with the team and took the season ticket base to 13,500 during his tenure with the organization. Piper was also responsible for the radio and television broadcast functions of the team, including creating the Oilers Radio Network that grew to 24 affiliate stations. Prior to working in Edmonton, Piper was the President and Chief Executive Officer for SRO Partners, Inc., a premier sports marketing consulting company that specializes in working with major and minor league sports franchises and universities to improve their revenues. A graduate of the Unversity of Oregon, Piper has also worked for the Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association and served as Director of Advertising Sales for ESPN. In his role with the Hurricanes, Piper will oversee the Corporate and Ticket Sales departments of the organization as well as coordinating the team’s Marketing efforts.
