RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Southeast Division Champion Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has assigned forward Shane Willis to its International Hockey League affiliate, the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Hurricanes open the 1999-2000 season against the Boston Bruins at the FleetCenter on Saturday, October 2, 1999.
Willis, 22, made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes last season playing seven games for the team in February. Chosen with the team's fourth pick in 1997 (88th overall), Willis was the Hurricanes' top American Hockey League scorer totaling 81 points (31g, 50a) in 73 games for the Beast of New Haven. In his first season in the league, Willis (6'0", 176 lbs.) was named AHL Rookie of the Year, AHL First Team All-Star and was selected to play in the 1999 AHL All-Star Game.
Carolina hosts the New Jersey Devils in their first home game of the 1999-2000 regular season at the new Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena on October 29, 1999.
