RALEIGH, NC (June 12, 2000) –Gretzky All-Stars, an in-line hockey team representing the Wayne Gretzky Center in Apex, captured the First Annual Canes Hockey Tour Championship presented by Reichhold held June 10 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. The Gretzky All-Stars defeated the Biscuit Bangers (Raleigh), 4-1, in the championship game after posting a 4-0 record in divisional play.
Six teams competing in the 10-and-Under age in-line hockey tournament were divided into two divisions (Red and Black) with every team playing teams within their own division twice. The two teams with the best divisional record advanced to the championship game. Along with the Biscuit Bangers, Pinehurst and the Top Gun Hornets (Charlotte) comprised the Red Division and the Gretzky All-Stars, Vanstory Force (Fayetteville) and Top Gun Tom Cats (Charlotte) comprised the Black Division.
The Canes Mobile Hockey Tour presented by Reichhold, in its second year of existence, strives to give local youth hockey players the opportunity to play in quality tournaments at a low cost and meet teams from across the state. Last April, Clemson University captured the Canes College In-Line Hockey Tournament after Elon was victorious in 1999. This fall, the NHL’s In-Line hockey tournament, NHL Breakout, will visit the Entertainment and Sports Arena on September 9-10.
