FOUR CAROLINA HURRICANES TO PLAY IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

RALEIGH, NC (April 26, 2001) – The Carolina Hurricanes will be represented in the annual IIHF World Championships, which begins Saturday in Germany, by goaltender Arturs Irbe, defensemen Sandis Ozolinsh, David Tanabe and forward Sami Kapanen.

The annual tournament runs from April 28 to May 13 in Nuremberg, Cologne and Hanover, Germany. There are four groups of four teams apiece which play a preliminary round robin. The top two teams in each group then advance to the quarterfinals and eventually move on to the finals.

Irbe and Ozolinsh will play for the Latvian national team which opens play Saturday against Sweden in Group C. Tanabe will play for the United States for the first time as a National Hockey League player. He will see his first action against Ukraine on Saturday, also in Group C.

Kapanen, a member of the Finland Olympic Team in 1998 and 2002, will see his first action in Group B against Austria on Saturday. Slovakia and Japan are the other two teams in Group B.
