Community: Join Canes for a Cure

by Katharine Kelley / Carolina Hurricanes
In just 12 days, Hurricanes/RBC Center employees and community supporters will join forces with other community partners in the fight against breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is slated to begin at 6:00 a.m. on June 13 at Meredith College.

Don’t worry, 6:00 a.m. isn’t the official race start time, it’s just when the race registration opens. Which ever race you might be participating in will determine your start time. For instance, I’ll be participating in the co-ed, recreational race which begins at 9:00 a.m., while some others might be starting at 7:00 a.m. (adult competitive race) or at 8:15 for the women’s-only race.

I want to encourage you all to join our team – ‘Canes for a Cure. It’s not too late. Even though the online registration officially closed last week, you can still formally join our team through what the race labels “paper registration.” You can find the paper registration form on the race website. Fill it out appropriately and include a check made out to Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure for the appropriate amount and then return it to me at the RBC Center.

The catch is I have to pick up all of our team supplies tomorrow afternoon, so the deadline for paper registration is tomorrow (Tuesday, June 2) at 12:00. However, you can still informally join our team until the day before the race. For this, you register as an individual and pick up your packet materials on race day at one of the packet pick-up locations.

I will be here throughout the day today and tomorrow morning before going to pick up our team’s materials. You can drop off your registration and checks at the RBC Center VIP Security Desk – just attention the materials to my name (Katharine Kelley).

This race is a great opportunity to round up your friends and family for a great cause. The Triangle Komen Race for the Cure is the largest foot race in the state. There are also race day activities for children, a survivor’s precession and recognition, and an awards ceremony for race winners.

Specific to our team ‘Canes for a Cure, the first 75 people to register for our team will receive a ‘Canes for a Cure T-shirt. Additionally, the top fundraiser or donor will receive a 2008-2009 Team Signed Carolina Hurricanes Replica Stick. Four additional prizes, including an Eric Staal Autographed Replica Stick, an autographed Ray Whitney 8x10 photo, an official 2006 Stanley Cup Game Seven Puck Signed by Niclas Wallin, and a Cam Ward autographed Heart of the Hurricanes T-shirt, will be randomly awarded to registered participants.

Also, if you know you can’t participate, we would still appreciate your support through a donation. You can make a donation directly to our team through any individual participant (if you don’t know anyone participating you can just donate to me – Katharine Kelley) and the donation will count as a team donation. The way the website is set up, you cannot access our team page anymore, but because I am the team captain, I can access donation and team registration records.

I’ll announce a meeting spot for our team to meet prior to the race start so we can get a team picture, pass out t-shirts, and walk/run together if you’d like. So, spread the word, join our team, and I hope to see you at the Race on Saturday, June 13.
