Community: Another Dave Roberts?

by Doug Warf / Carolina Hurricanes
I remember a magical time in early fall of 2004. The Red Sox were trying to throw away another great post-season team but I couldn’t turn the TV off. The Sox trailed the Yankees three games to none in the series and it was the bottom of the ninth inning. Kevin Millar drew a walk and Dave Roberts was inserted as a pinch runner. Dave Roberts became my glimmer of hope.

Tonight, we need a Dave Roberts on first. Who knows who that will be, but believe me, if it happens…when it happens…it will be something you will remember for a long time.

I know there was some talk about losing the beards…but the beards are definitely still winning for the kids.

Beard Update
One guy that definitely should not shave is Erik Cole. Erik is the new Beard-a-thon leader, thanks to a $500 donation by a big-time Canes fan (and Cole fan). That donation helped move Erik 11 spots from 12th place all the way to the top of the leaderboard.

Here is the overall leader board:

As you can see, the best beards are rising to the top of the leader board. Five of the top six fundraisers are also sporting the 3 puck rating beard. The only player receiving a 3 rating not in the top 6 is Ryan Bayda.

Yes, it does have to do a little with popularity, but I do have to say that I agree with most of the voting. Ruutu’s beard is not as good as Cole/Wallin/Bayda…but he might be the only exception in my book. Cullen is probably the only “2” that I feel should be higher. However, I think he is “maintaining” his beard a little better this year…so perhaps the 2 is justified.

Tonight’s Auction
Each night there are some awesome auction items…but tonight’s has two VERY UNIQUE items.

First- the Ron Francis Jersey is amazing. This is one of only three remaining game worn Francis jerseys that we have and this one definitely has the most wear of all of them. For those who truly like jerseys “game worn”, this one contains tons of puck marks and has been stitched several times on the arm.

Second- Jussi’s OT winning stick. We were lucky enough to secure Jussi Jokinen’s stick that scored the overtime winning goal in game three of the Boston series. Jussi has definitely had some memorable goals this year, and this stick would be an excellent addition to any Canes fan’s collection

I am also a big fan of the Blackhawks jersey (best in the league aside from our’s in my opinion), so I really like the Ruutu jersey from his Chicago days. This replica will be another of the great items up for bid tonight.

For a full list of the items, check here.

Be sure to stop by and see us on the concourse adjacent to section 129

Koozies
When you stop by to see the items tonight, be sure to pick up your round three drink koozie. The koozie, featuring Scott Walker and Cam Ward, sold very well at game 3. We would love to sell-out tonight, but I guess it wouldn’t be bad to have a few left for Game 6.
