'CANES GET ONE FROM HUNGRY DUCKS

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

ANAHEIM, CALIF. (Feb. 11, 2001) -- The Carolina Hurricanes skated out of Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim with one point having recorded a 2-2 tie against the Mighty Ducks. Rob DiMaio and Rod Brind'Amour found the net for Carolina as goaltender Arturs Irbe recorded 32 saves and second star honors.

The tie extended the Mighty Ducks' home winless streak to 10 games dating back to Jan. 3, a 3-2 overtime win against the Florida Panthers. Anaheim has gone 3-16-3-1 in their last 23 games.

Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne scored 37 seconds into the game to give the Mighty Ducks 1-0 lead that carried into the second period. The goal was the quickest to start a game allowed by the Hurricanes this season.

The Hurricanes answered in the second during a five-minute Anaheim power play when Ducks goaltender Jean Sebastian Giguere played the puck to forward Paul Kariya behind the net. The puck took a Carolina bounce off Kariya's skate and onto the stick of DiMaio who shoveled it into the empty net. The shorthanded goal was the Hurricanes' fifth of the season and first since DiMaio's on Nov. 22 at Pittsburgh.

Brind'Amour put the Carolina ahead at 3:13 of the third period during a 5-3 Hurricanes power play. Captain Ron Francis and rookie forward Shane Willis earned assists on Brind'Amour's 12th goal of the season.

Anaheim wingman Mike LeClerc scored the game-tying goal when he redirected Matt Cullen's shot under the pads of Irbe with 8:26 remaining in regulation time. The goal was LeClerc's 13th of the season.

Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities during the overtime but strong play from both goaltenders kept the score knotted 2-2 after the extra session.

"We looked like a team that had a couple of days off between games," said Carolina coach Paul Maurice. "We got better and stronger after the shorthanded goal. There wasn't much flow to the game. At this point every point is a big point. We still have a chance to end this road trip on a positive note in Detroit."

The game was the second taken to overtime during this four-game Carolina road swing. The Hurricanes defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 on Feb. 7 when Jeff O'Neill found the net 26 seconds into overtime. Carolina's overtime record is now 4-2-7.

NOTES: The Hurricanes will face the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena. Carolina has not won at Detroit since the 1989-90 season.
