On this date in 1964, Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall is born.
Hextall burst onto the scene during the 1986-87 season. He led the NHL in games played during the regular season (66) and playoffs (26) as the Flyers won the Patrick Division Championship and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals. Hextall captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team, the NHL First All-Star Team and won the Vezina Trophy as the League's best goaltender following the 1986-87 season.
In 10 seasons with the Flyers over two different tours of duty (1986-87 through 1991-92 and 1994-95 through 1997-98), Hextall compiled a 240-172-58 record, 18 shutouts and 2.91 GAA in 489 regular season games. He is first on the Flyers All-Time List in regular season games played by a goaltender (489) and wins (240). He also has the most playoff wins in franchise history (45).
