They Said It: Flyers, Senators react to shootout

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

Flyers react to breaking out of their shootout slump and the Senators comment on the shootout loss…

Wayne Simmonds
“We have practiced a lot all year long and we know we have to get better and bear down. We have to get better at shootouts and tonight was a start... I think you have to come in with a plan and have variations of what you will do because it depends on what the goalie does. You have to make the goalie bite first, but if he doesn’t you have to make a good shot.”

Jakub Voracek
“Felt good. I almost forgot how it feels. A couple huge stops by Mase (Steve Mason) in the shootout and a huge one from Simmer. It’s a good feeling. We got two points after five games and we got to keep it rolling.”

Michael Del Zotto
“It's nice to get a win in general but a shootout win too. Mase played unbelievable for us tonight… would've been nice to get a goal earlier but we found a way to get the two points and that's what we need.”

Claude Giroux
“Especially a win at home, in the shootout there, the fans were in there. When Wayne jumped on the ice, I had goose bumps. Just to win that game… after a big win like this hopefully we can get going and start winning a couple in a row.”

Steve Mason
“Felt great. It’s been a while since we had that feeling after a shootout. It’s nice to come out on top now that we've been working on it a little bit at practice. It’s not always fun practicing stuff you're not necessarily good at. It’s nice to get this win a little more because we put a little bit of extra work in it.”

Craig Berube (Head Coach)
“I think confidence and mental is a big part of it for sure. You have to remember, shootouts… not so much for the goalie I think it’s different. Players, some players don’t think they’re very good at it, but I think (Jakub) Voracek this year, really the only time he started shootouts or starting scoring in shootouts, he really wasn’t a shootout guy before this and he has the skill to do it. Obviously (Claude) Giroux has been one. We got some young guys we’re trying to improve and get better at it for sure. A lot of it has to do with skill and guys that are good at shootouts.”

Craig Anderson (Goaltender)
“Losing is not fun whether its overtime or regulation. They’re loser points. That’s what they are. We lost. We still got a point but the feeling of winning the feeling of feeling good about what you’ve done and what you accomplished – we didn’t accomplish anything. We lost.”

Bobby Ryan (Forward)
“I thought we had chances to win it. I thought we did a pretty good job on the Giroux and Voracek line. It was by committee. We stayed above them all night and didn’t let them generate any kind of momentum for the team. Ultimately, we lost the point, right? But at the same time, I thought we did a lot of good things. That was a very, very up-tempo game from both sides. I thought it was a heck of a hockey game.”

Dave Cameron (Head Coach)
“We were very happy with the way things were going through the first two. A tough building, good team on the road. I thought we had a real good third, but just came up short.”
