With over 500 votes cast in the last two days, Nick Cousins first NHL goal was selected by fans as the winner of the wildcard round in PhiladelphiaFlyers.com’s Highlight of the Year tournament.
Cousins earned over 200 votes and edged out Michael Raffl’s goal vs. Detroit which took second place in the poll. He now advances into the main field of the tournament and will face off against Michal Neuvirth’s last second save against the Minnesota Wild in the Quarterfinal round.
The play unfolded with Cousins blocking a shot at the point from Sabres right wing Justin Bailey, who had trouble with the puck deflecting back to him. Cousins then poked the puck past Bailey and raced after it in the offensive zone before blasting a slap shot from the top of the circle to beat Buffalo goaltender Robin Lehner.
Next week’s vote will see Steve Mason’s amazing post-to-post save on Bruins forward David Pastrnak go up against Shayne Gostisbehere’s overtime winner in Toronto to extend his record point streak to 15 games.
For now, let’s take another look at the wildcard champion below…
