POSTGAME 5: Jackets Edge Flyers

by Brian Smith | / Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers recovered from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime and eventually a shootout, but fell 3-2 to the Blue Jackets.  Brandon Saad scored with 5:59 left in the first period, a split-second after Scott Laughton was released from the penalty box, and Ryan Murray converted an actual PPG with 1:51 left in the second.  Laughton potted his third of the season 5:32 into the third period, and Jake Voracek then tied it up with a goal against his former team with 5:41 remaining.  Cam Atkinson and Wayne Simmonds scored in the first three shootout rounds, forcing the event to extra turns until Brandon Dubinsky scored in the sixth round.

Jake Voracek continued his hot play on the left wing of the Flyers' second line with the game-tying goal in the third period.  He played a give-and-go with Sean Couturier at the Columbus line and carried the puck low into the left circle before wristing one past Joonas Korpisalo, tying the game with 5:41 remaining.

1ST – Joonas Korpisalo: Made 30 saves and five more in the shootout to earn his first NHL win.

2ND – Steve Mason: Stopped 35 of 37 in the SOL, including several situations where Columbus players had a step on the Flyers defense.

3RD – Brandon Dubinsky: Won the game with his shootout goal in the sixth round.  Dubinsky also had an assist, three hits and was 9-for-16 on faceoffs.

The game marked the first time the Flyers have ever gone to the shootout against Columbus.  Chicago, Detroit and Minnesota are the three remaining teams the Flyers have not yet faced in a shootout... Columbus had 37 shots, marking just the fourth time they’ve had 37 or more shots against the Flyers.  Two of the other times have been within the last two seasons – Jan. 23, 2014 (39) and Nov. 14, 2014 (38)... The shootout took six rounds; the last shootout of that length the Flyers were in was almost exactly a year ago, Dec. 18, 2014, a 2-1 SOL vs. Florida at the Wells Fargo Center... The Flyers were not charged with a giveaway in the game.  The last time they went an entire game with zero giveaways was November 12, 2013 at New Jersey... The Flyers had 32 shots on goal and 35 more shots that didn’t reach the net.  22 were blocked and 13 missed.  Radko Gudas had six shots blocked... Voracek extended his scoring streak to four games (2-4-6).  He has two goals, three assists and 15 shots on goal in the three games since moving to the left wing of a line with Sean Couturier and Wayne Simmonds.

“I think we had a good second period,” Voracek said.  “We came to the locker room after the second and said just stick with it, we’re going to get some bounces.  I think we played very good I would say the last 45 or 50 minutes of the game.”

“We’ll take the positives.  We came back and got a big point out of that third period there.  It would have been nice to close it out in the shootout obviously… we had a couple chances.  But we got the one point and we’ll focus on the one game here before the break.”
