In the days following the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers, the Adirondack Phantoms, the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate, will face off against the Hershey Bears outdoors at Citizens Bank Park™ on Friday, January 6. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
The game features the rekindling of one of the AHL's greatest rivalries, which developed when the Phantoms were based in Philadelphia and played Hershey more than 140 times between 1996 and 2009. While Adirondack and Hershey now play in different divisions and don't see as much of each other anymore, there is still an extra buzz in the air when the Phantoms take the ice against the Chocolate and White.
“It will be a great opportunity for fans living in the Philadelphia region to support the Flyers AHL affiliate and experience the excitement surrounding the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® events taking place throughout the week,” said Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko.
"We are excited to be part of the series of outdoor games surrounding the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®,” said President of the Adirondack Phantoms Rob Brooks. “This once in a lifetime opportunity will be a memorable experience for our organization and our fans"
The Phantoms vs. Bears game is the third game in a series of three outdoor games to be played at Citizens Bank Park™ between Saturday, December 31, 2011 and Friday, January 6, 2012. The Philadelphia Flyers Alumni will host the New York Rangers Alumni in a historic game on December 31 at 1p.m. and the Philadelphia Flyers will host New York Rangers on Monday, January 2 in the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® at 1 p.m.
The 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® continues the tradition the NHL has established of hosting a regular-season game outdoors at the onset of the new year to celebrate the origin and traditions of hockey. Last season, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field on New Year’s Day 2011, the Boston Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park on New Year’s Day 2010, the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field on New Year’s Day 2009 and the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Year’s Day 2008. There were two additional regular-season outdoor NHL games played in Canada when the Calgary Flames hosted the Montreal Canadiens during the Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium in 2011 and the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadiens at Commonwealth Stadium in 2003.
