PHILADELPHIA, PA --
Mike Smigelski of Delbarton scored with just five minutes remaining in the third period and the New Jersey Prep all stars held on to defeat the Pennsylvania/Delaware Prep stars, 6-5, in the inaugural DHI Cup Final held Nov. 12 at the Wachovia Center. Mike Seyglinski (Monsignor Donovan) scored a pair of goals and Zach Stern (St. Augustine Prep), Ryan Mara (St. Augustine Prep) and Mark Rivera (Christian Brothers Academy) each connected once for the Garden State contingent. Rivera, who also collected an assist in the game, earned Tournament MVP honors and was awarded a $4,000 college scholarship from the Keith and Lisa Primeau Hockey Scholarship Fund.

Adam Berkle of La Salle College High School led the PA/DE attack with two goals and an assist. Adding single tallies were Eddie Banes (Cardinal O’Hara), Nick Seravalli (Holy Ghost Prep), and Vinnie D’Angelo (Delaware Military Academy).

The DHI Cup Showcase is a four-team hockey tournament, featuring top high school seniors in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. It gives local players the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of more than 25 college, junior, and professional Scouts. The tournament is a joint effort between the Flyers and Keith Primeau’s Durham Hockey Institute.

”Paul Holmgren attended both DHI Cup games and the feedback has been real positive,'' said Primeau. “Even the junior and college programs have been giving me real positive feedback as well. As far as hockey goes, we are trying to copy as similarly as possible the idea of the Carpenter Cup in baseball. There are lots of tournaments that come out and showcase where kids can be seen, but not really with the same set up as we've created.''

In the semifinal round of the DHI Cup, the PA/DE Prep stars defeated the NJ Public stars, 3-2. The NJ Prep team downed the PA/DE Publics, 11-5.
