In honor of the Philadelphia Flyers upcoming 50th Anniversary Season, the Flyers Alumni Association is pledging $2 million to support construction of a future ice rink for the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation (“Snider Hockey”). Once built, the rink will be named the Edward M. Snider / Alumni Ice Rink in honor of the Flyers founder and Comcast Spectacor chairman. Currently, Snider Hockey plans to construct new facilities in Germantown, Drexel/Mantua, and South Philadelphia and expects to break ground on its next site in 2016.
The Alumni will present a symbolic check to Snider Hockey President Scott Tharp and student athletes from Snider Hockey prior to the Buffalo Sabres vs. Philadelphia Flyers game at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday, February 11.
“The Flyers Alumni would like to show our appreciation to Mr. Snider, who has made such a vast impact on our careers and lives, by making this pledge,” said Brad Marsh, president of the Flyers Alumni Association. "We know that Snider Hockey is going to be his legacy, and we want to be a part of that, so that we can provide a future for the boys and girls of the Greater Philadelphia Region and carry out Mr. Snider’s mission. It is one way for us to simply say ‘thank you.’”
“This commitment by the Alumni will help us further our dream of creating a new multi-purpose ice rink with classrooms and community rooms to help support our programming,” said Tharp. “Our mission is to build lives and unite communities, and with this generous pledge, we look forward to helping even more student athletes succeed in the game of life.”
Last week, the Alumni Association kicked off fundraising efforts for the Snider Hockey rink when more than 35 former Flyers took the ice before a sellout crowd in the first-ever Alumni Game at the home of the Reading Royals, the Club’s ECHL affiliate.
The 50th anniversary season will also feature several Alumni events and activations to continue fundraising efforts, including two signature events—the Flyers Alumni Golf Invitational, scheduled for Monday, July 18, 2016, as well as the Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp, scheduled for Friday, August 19, 2016 – Monday, August 22, 2016 in Atlantic City, NJ.

The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation partnered with the City of Philadelphia and the State of Pennsylvania in 2008 to refurbish four of the City’s ice rinks, enclosing them and making them year-round operational.
The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation was created by Philadelphia Flyers Chairman Ed Snider in 2005 as his personal commitment to teach children important life lessons. Its mission of Snider Hockey is to build lives and unite communities, helping educate young people to succeed in the game of life. Snider Hockey programs are provided at no cost and are focused on underserved boys and girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to play, with an emphasis on character development, life skills, fitness, nutrition, and academics.
