(December 16) - The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 5'11", 215-pound defenseman Alexei Zhitnik (ZHIHT-nihk) from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenseman Freddy Meyer and a conditional draft pick, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.
"Alexei is a very durable player," said Holmgren in making the announcement. "He can play a lot of minutes. He has a wealth of experience. We think that he can really upgrade our defense."
Zhitnik, 34, recorded two goals and nine assists for 11 points and 40 penalty minutes in 30 games for the NY Islanders this season. He led the team in plus/minus rating at +13.
A 14-year NHL veteran, Zhitnik has registered 88 goals and 348 assists for 436 points and 1,158 penalty minutes in 971 career regular season games with the Los Angeles Kings (1992-93 to 1994-95), Buffalo Sabres (1994-95 through 2003-04) and the Islanders (2005-06 and 2006-07).
Meyer, 25, recorded two goals and three assists for five points and 14 penalty minutes in 25 games for the Flyers this season. Over the last three seasons with the Flyers (2003-04, 2005-06 and 2006-07), Meyer registered eight goals and 24 assists for 32 points and 47 penalty minutes in 83 career regular season games.
He was signed as a free agent by the Flyers on May 21, 2003.
