The Flyers have played the Rangers more than any other team in franchise history and tonight is the 281st all-time meeting - The Flyers own a 119-117-27-7 all-time record against the Rangers… They have also played the Rangers in the playoffs more than any other team in both series played (11) and games played (54)… They also play the Rangers fives times this year, marking only one of two opponents the Flyers will play five times (NY Islanders the other)… This is the first of three meetings on home ice for the Flyers - last year the Flyers went 1-3-0 in the season series, but went 1-1-0 on home ice and have won five of the last seven meetings against the Rangers at home.
Tonight the Flyers support the Hockey Fights Cancer cause around the NHL and for the first time in Flyers history, the team will kick off the Hockey Fights Cancer game with a ceremonial puck drop, which will be made by 12-year-old David Gibson of Broomall, PA, who is currently battling liver cancer and receiving treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia… All fans in attendance will receive cancer awareness rally towels featuring the phrase “I Fight Boldly For__” presented by Toyota… All Flyers players will wear limited-edition purple jerseys during pre-game warm-ups… The Flyers Wives, partnered with Fox Chase Cancer Center, support the region’s only mobile screening unit - the unit, complete with state-of-the-art mammography technology, provides convenience and potentially life-saving services for women in underserved communities throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region… The Flyers Wives and the Fox Chase mobile unit will be on location this evening at the Wells Fargo Center to educate fans about the importance of regular mammograms.
The Flyers have won three of their last four games and have scored a goal on the power play in four of six games, while allowing just one goal on the penalty kill in their last 17 times shorthanded… The Rangers enter tonight playing the second of games on back-to-back nights after a 4-1 win over Arizona last night… The Rangers have outscored their opponent 10-3 in first periods and have tallied the first goal of the game in six of the eight contests… The Flyers have not allowed a goal in the third period in the last four games and in five of their six games overall this season - they rank second in the NHL with just two goals against in the third period (MTL - 1)… Wayne Simmonds has a three-game point streak heading into tonight and has recorded a point in four of the Flyers six games this year… Defenseman Dan Girardi has 23 points in 49 career games against the Flyers - all of them assists.
Giroux is coming off a two-goal game in which he scored the game winner in overtime and his three goals leads the team so far this year… Giroux is third on the team and leads all Flyers forwards in ice-time (19:43)… He continues to lead all NHL players since the 2010-11 season in points (380) and power-play points (154)… Giroux has played the most games against the Rangers than any other team in his NHL career (36) - he has 25 assists and 31 points against the Blueshirts. Last season, Stepan led the Rangers in scoring against the Flyers with five points, all of them assists, in four games of the season series… Lifetime, Stepan averages nearly a point-per-game against the Flyers with six goals and 18 assists for 24 points in 25 games…  Selected 51st overall by the Rangers in 2008, Stepan leads the Rangers in goals (92), assists (165), and points (257), and ranks second in games played (370) and plus-minus rating (+86) since he joined the team in 2010-11.
