FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Red Wings

The Flyers play four of their next six games on the road before the All-Star break… They are 8-10-3 on the road this year and won their last road contest, 4-3 in OT at Minnesota, to snap a five-game losing skid… Wayne Simmonds has seven of his 12 goals and 14 of his 24 points while playing on the road, while Michael Del Zotto has two of his three goals and seven of his 11 points away from the Wells Fargo Center… The Red Wings return home for their first game of the New Year after spending the first 15 days on a six-game road trip… On that trip, the Red Wings won five of their six games to surge into second place in the Atlantic Division… Justin Abdelkader has 10 of his 13 goals playing at home, while rookie Dylan Larkin leads Detroit in scoring on home ice with 17 points (9g-8a) in 23 games.


The Detroit Red Wings lead the NHL in one-goal game victories with 18 for a record of 18-3-7, and are tied for second in the NHL in one-goal games at 28… Their last six wins have all come by one-goal margins… The Flyers have played in 22 one-goal games, going 12-2-8, and five of their last six games have been decided by one-goal… The Red Wings are ranked second in the NHL with 15 games going past regulation play, trailing the Vancouver Canucks and tonight’s opponent, the Flyers, who have both played 16 games past regulation…   Detroit is 7-5 in the 3 on 3 overtimes and 1-2 in shootouts, while the Flyers are 7-4 in overtime and 1-4 in shootouts.

This is the first of three meetings against the Red Wings this season and first of two in Detroit… The Flyers have won four of their last five meetings with the Red Wings, including their last contest by a score of 7-2 in March of last year, and are 7-3-0 in their last 10 meetings dating back to 2009-10… In the Flyers-Red Wings rivalry each team has had success on home ice - the Flyers have a .711 winning percentage with a 40-13-11 record at home, but only a .379 winning percentage playing at Detroit, going 20-36-10… The Flyers have three players on their roster who average a point per-game or better in their career against the Red Wings (Giroux, Raffl & Streit) while the Red Wings have two (Datsyuk & Zetterberg).

The Flyers captain has recorded points in two straight games and three of his last four outings with five assists in that span… He continues to lead the Flyers in overall scoring with 34 points and overall power-play points (14) while being tied for the team lead with 12 goals… Giroux is riding a seven-game point streak against the Red Wings, posting an assist in every game and recording a total of 13 points (4g-9a) in that span… Overall against Detroit, he averages 1.27 points per-game in his career with 14 points (5g-9a) in 11 games - it’s his second highest points percentage of any NHL team (Chicago: 1.33).

The dynamic rookie out of University of Michigan is tied for the team lead in both goals scored (14) and overall points (30) while appearing in 43 of the team’s 44 games thus far… He enters tonight’s game with points in six of his last seven games (1g-5a)… He leads the Wings and is tied for second among all NHL players with a plus-minus rating of +23, while his 14 goals rank second among all NHL rookie and 30 points are ranked third… Larkin was the Red Wings first round pick at 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft and will play his first NHL game against the Flyers.
