FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Capitals

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

This is the 100th all-time meeting in the nation’s capital between the Flyers and Capitals - the Flyers own a 43-38-13-5 record in DC… The Flyers won the last meeting in Washington and have gone 5-2-2 in their last nine meetings on the road against the Caps… This is just the second of four meetings against the Capitals this season, with the Flyers dropping a 5-2 loss on Nov. 12… Mark Streit has the most goals (8) against the Capitals than any other team in the NHL (tied against NYR) and has 26 points in 40 career games against Washington… Former Caps goaltender Michal Neuvirth has never faced his former team since leaving in 2013… Alex Ovechkin leads the Capitals with 29 goals and 46 points in just 35 games against the Flyers, while Nicklas Backstrom averages nearly an assist per-game against the Flyers with 30 helpers in 31 games.

The Caps get back to the ice after having seven days off between games due to the Blizzard of 2016… They come into tonight having won seven of their last eight games and have the most wins (35), points (73) and winning percentage (.793) in the NHL… In terms of wins, the Capitals are tied for the best start in NHL history through a team’s first 46 games of a season… On home ice, the Caps numbers are even more impressive - they are riding a 12-game home winning streak and have not lost on home ice in over two months with their last loss coming on Nov. 19 (3-2 vs. Dallas)… They have lost just three games in regulation and four losses of any kind on home ice this year.
Shayne Gostisbehere has a three-game point streak with a goal and three assists for four points in that stretch - he now leads all rookie defensemen outright in both goals (8) and points (20)… The line of Wayne Simmonds (5g-3a), Claude Giroux (2g-6a) and Jakub Voracek (2g-8a) combined for 26 points in their last 10 games… Caps goaltender Braden Holtby leads the NHL with 30 wins and has posted a 22-1-2 record in his last 26 games with two shutouts, a 2.02 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage… Since entering the NHL in 2005-06, Alex Ovechkin has posted 151 more goals, 47 more points and 36 more multi-goal games than any other player… The Flyers have had six straight games decided by one goal as well as nine of their last 10 games… The Capitals are unbeaten in regulation this season when they score a goal on the power play, going 22-0-2.
After a slow start to the season Voracek continues to find the scoresheet, he has points in his last two games (1g-2a) and five of his last six games to post eight points (2g-6a) in that stretch… Voracek has not gone two consecutive games without a point in over a month, recording at least a point in 13 of 17 games since Dec. 11… At 272 games, Voracek is four away from tying Bob Clarke for fourth place on the team’s all-time “iron-man” list at 276 consecutive games played… Against the Capitals, Voracek has nine goals and 16 points in 22 career games. Kuznetsov has risen atop of the Caps leaderboard with 10 points in his last four games, recording eight assist and two goals in that span… He leads the team in assists (33), points (48) and plus-minus (+25) while appearing in all 46 games for Washington… He has new career highs in every offensive category and has posted 14 multi-point games this season… The 26th overall pick by the Caps in the 2010 draft is in his third season in the NHL… He has three assists in five career games against the Flyers.
