WHL Playoff Roundup: Sven Baertschi

by Torie Peterson / Calgary Flames

Portland defeated Kamloops in seven games

Sven Baertschi kicked off the second round series against the Kamloops Blazers with a four-point performance in the Winterhawks 5-3 victory but his offensive production slowly tapered off from that point on. He scored two goals in Game 2 and then went on to post a single point four of the remaining five outings. He was held pointless and ended up with a minus-three rating in Game 5 when the Blazers handed the Winterhawks a 7-2 loss.

The Blazers were incredibly resilient in the series. They dropped the first three games but came storming back in the next three, forcing a Game 7. Baertschi played an integral role in the Winterhawks 2-0 win in the final game of series, pushing them into Western Conference Final against the Tri-City Americans.

His incredible vision was on display when he was able to find Marcel Noebels all alone in the slot and the forward wasted no time snapping a shot past the Kamloops netminder. That 1-0 lead that would stick until Brendan Leipsic scored an insurance marker midway through the third period.

In seven games against Kamloops, Baertschi accrued 10 points. He has 21 points in 11 postseason games this year, good for second in the WHL playoff scoring race. His linemate Ty Rattie is leading all skaters with 23 points.

The Western Conference Final kicks off on Apr. 20th in Tri-City.
