Calgary, AB – The Flames Better Halves, wives and girlfriends of the Calgary Flames players, raised $13,500 for the Flames Foundation for Life during its first ever Autographed Stick Auction on Monday, March 12th during the Flames game versus the St. Louis Blues. The auction included over 50 autographed sticks from NHL stars across the League, including a team set from the 2006-2007 Calgary Flames.
The top seller was an autographed Alexander Ovechkin Stick, which sold for $925! The second highest bids were placed on the sticks of Jarome Iginla, Miikka Kiprusoff, Dion Phaneuf and Joe Sakic for $650 each.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Rotary/Flames House. The Flames Foundation for Life and the Rotary Clubs of Calgary have teamed up to donate $2.5 Million to help build Alberta''s first pediatric hospice. Rotary/Flames House will help hundreds of families needing specialized care for their very sick and terminally ill children.
The Flames Foundation for Life is the charitable arm of the Calgary Flames through which more than 29 million dollars in funding has already been directed to education, health, medical research, amateur sport and recreation.
The Flames Better Halves plan to host an Autographed Puck Raffle during the 2007 NHL Playoffs. Fans will have the chance to win jerseys, sticks and other Flames memorabilia by purchasing a limited edition, autographed raffle puck. The Flames Better Halves has been active in the Calgary community since the club''s arrival in 1980 and has been behind numerous fundraising events during that period.
